Nitty Gritty Portfolio Course

Ready to upgrade your resume?

Separate Yourself from the 9-5

If you're upgrading the way you work, why not upgrade the way you show it? The Nitty Gritty Portfolio Course teaches you how to do exactly that.

Why did I make this course?

Hey! My name is Jay Jones, the owner of the Nitty Gritty Virtual Assistant and I developed this course because I saw a need. A need for virtual assistants, freelancers, entrepreneurs, and business owners in the service industry to have a way to showcase their skills to prospective clients without being confined to a traditional resume or worry about a website.

Now, are you thinking that because your skills may be administrative heavy a portfolio wouldn't work for you? After all, a portfolio is only for graphic designers, web developers and people who know how to use Photoshop, right? WRONG.

Not only does this course cover how to create a design based portfolio for those who have designs to show off, it also goes over how to highlight your administrative skills and show exactly who you are and what you can do without having to jam everything about you into one page like with a resume. Heck, I teach you how to write one whole page that only talks about yourself, your business, and who you want to work for and you still have room for your work history/experience, pricing, contact information and more!

Behind my love for portfolios

A little over 3 years ago when I was first starting out as a virtual assistant I did it as a side hustle. A resume, portfolio, or a website were the last things on my mind. I was more concerned with getting work that I could then put down as experience in a resume or portfolio.

But in early 2017 when I began to take being a virtual assistant seriously and started forming my own business (I had been relying on freelance marketplaces to get my work up until then), I knew I needed a way to showcase what I had learned and done during my first years and neither a resume or a website were going to cut it.

For one, I knew I couldn't possibly shove everything that I do, what I've done before, how to contact me, who I help, and why into one page. I also knew I had to figure out a way to show why I'm the best for my market without having to worry about creating a website, where or how to host it, what platform I'd use, keeping it up to date and making sure it doesn't crash at the worst time possible, ie when I'm applying for a job with a dream client. That's when I decided to make my first portfolio.

"This course summed up exactly what is needed in a portfolio along with the required steps to create your own. I loved the videos and felt that they were right on pace for any type of learner. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to design their own portfolio for any type of business."

What does the course cover?

A peek at the course:

Lesson 1 covers the basics. Here you will learn what a portfolio is as well as the two different types, administrative and design, and how to choose the best one for your business. The last part of the lesson teaches you what a niche is, how to find your own if you haven't already and I also guide you through a bit of research to help you stand out from others who are targeting your niche.

Lesson 2 dives into the first type of portfolios, administrative, and I teach you what copy is and how to write the absolute best of it for you and your business. This is where you learn how to showcase what you do, who you do it for and why on your about page as well as how to write the remaining sections of your portfolio. Lesson 3 covers similar information but is geared towards those wanting to create a design portfolio.

Lesson 4 is where you learn how to design your portfolio. I give you step by step instructions on how to connect your portfolio to the rest of your brand. If you don't have a solid grip on what your brand is yet, I also help you with that. With the help of research on your industry, I teach you how to stand out from the crowd and draw your niche towards you and your business.

Lastly, in lesson 5 I show you the process of bringing your design ideas to life using Canva, a free online design program. I talk you through the creation process as I bring a friend's design to life using the program.

Every single lesson includes helpful resources to give you inspiration and encouragement as you go through each part of the course. I've also included worksheets that have lesson notes and action steps. These action steps are what guide you through creating your portfolio alongside the course so you can immediately implement what you've learned.

What's in it for you?

Not only do you learn how to create a stunning portfolio that lets prospective clients know the real you, you also learn a few skills that you can use when working with those clients. You learn how to beef up your writing skills, how to do industry research, how to create a design in Canva and so much more. You can then transfer all this to your social media marketing, email newsletters, proposals, cold emails, client work and wherever else you need to write or design.

With your new portfolio, you don't have to worry about your website going down or trying to jam everything about yourself and your business into one page. You have the freedom to expand upon your experience and expertise and hit home exactly why you're the best for your niche.

Lastly, you get access to the course-exclusive Facebook where you will be getting one on one support from myself and can ask questions and receive feedback from fellow course takers. Remember those action steps I mentioned early? This is where you'll post them so I can critique you and give you actionable feedback that will help you and your business stand out in your industry. You'll also be able to get more than one set of eyes on the design of your portfolio

The Nitty Gritty Portfolio course provides well organized, practical advice and exercises. By the end of the course I was able to create a well thought out and visually appealing portfolio that will bring me business. Being able to watch Jay work in Canva while [they] explained this was invaluable and transferable to other projects in Canva.
